Today, on my drive home, I went under an overpass and spotted a man standing up there and hanging a sign over the side that read, “fags are evil.” At first, I got royally pissed off and contemplated figuring out how to get off the highway and up there to…I don’t know what. Nothing I could say would have been likely to change his mind, and I’m not a violent or particularly confrontational person, and all 5′ of me isn’t exactly intimidating. But calling someone who happens to love someone of the same gender “evil” just blows my mind. Clearly, we have very different definitions for that word. Even if you believe it’s against your Christian values to embrace a homosexual lifestyle, “evil” seems a bit extreme.
When I pulled over at a rest stop, I texted my husband, still absolutely fuming. He texted back that perhaps the man was British, in which case, he’s not entirely off base, since “fag” is slang for cigarette over there, and cigarettes do cause cancer. Maybe it was really a public service announcement. Which made me laugh and stopped the churning thoughts.
And then, being in the south and amidst all the talk about taking the Confederate flag down from government buildings (which should happen but which will in no way cure racism), I desperately wanted to go back and put an “l” after the “f” so that his sign read, “flags are evil.”
