The Photo Vs. The Painting

Since I posted about how I often have to work from crummy photos (here and here), I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the photos next to the paintings to see what I mean. I’m sometimes left guessing. Other times, I guess and then ignore what the photo is showing me to make a bolder choice. Simply making easy changes like background color can completely alter the feel of a image, as can pushing the contrast between your highlights and shadows. I view the photos as a jumping off point. It’s good for reference, but I’m not bound to it (which is good since the photos are often pretty bad in the first place).First up is the Avocado and Cherry Tomatoes:

The awesome painting (I say very humbly)

Next is a garlic one:

And then some garlic cloves:

And piano pedals:

Hi, I’m Emily, and I’m a garlicoholic. Apparently. Just finished up my 4th garlic painting. This is getting ridiculous. Anyway, I remembered to take pics along the way so you can sort of see the progression:

Ooooooh, I just love it when you frame a painting and it seems to “finish” it! Take the 2 garlic paintings I did a few weeks ago. They looked great on their own, but I just popped them into frames and holygarlicbatman, I’m in love. I kind of wish I had enough room in my home to keep them.

Same dealio with the little pear painting that was so callously rejected from the juried show (which, by the way, I just picked up and was able to browse the works that got in, and they were all very modernist/conceptual, so I feel better that mine just wasn’t the style the juror was attracted to):

Working on Fractured Memories, Or What the Hell Am I Doing??!!

Here’s the problem with writing a book: it’s hard.

That is all.

Just kidding – I mean about that being all. I’m not kidding about it being hard. I spent most of Sunday and Monday working on Fractured Memories and have gotten a huge chunk of the first draft finished, but let me tell you, I spent about half of each day bawling my eyes out. Reliving this stuff sucks. It’s been three months since my dad died and for the first  two and a half, I really was pretty damn okay. Then Satch The World’s Greatest Cat died and I crumbled. And pretty much since then, I’ve been the giantest and hottest of messes. So adding writing about my dad into the mix is, like, quadruple hard. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m raw, because this ain’t my first dance with death, but I think I’m definitely medium rare.

I took a break while writing to get a little painting done, which resulted in finishing up the two little garlic paintings I already posted, but I also did a painting of my dad on his death bed to include in the book. ‘Cause, you know, nothing cheers you up while dealing with a death than painting a dead guy. It’s up in my studio drying, and I can’t wait until it’s dry enough to put in my storage room so I can stop looking at it. It’s not the most cheerful of images to walk in on when I go up to work on other stuff, but it may also be forcing me to confront those final mental images I have and, I’m hoping, exorcise them, or at least blunt them.

Here’s the painting:

Finally finished up this pair of garlic paintings over the weekend. Garlic is tedious and enthralling to paint. Getting the wrinkles in the paper thin outer layer is a little bit of a nightmare, but I’m generally up for the challenge. I have already been asked whether buying these would ward off vampires, and all I can say is that buying these paintings would most likely ward off paintings of vampires. You’re welcome.

Here’s Some Garlic for MLK Day

What does garlic have to do with MLK Day, you ask? Absolutely nothing, really. But I finished this new little painting on this, my day off, so I thought I’d share. Add a little flavor to your life or something. Or maybe reflect on the fact that, without a little flavor (which comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors), our world would be a pretty boring place. So while we aren’t where we need to be as a country in terms of allowing all the colors and flavors skin can come in into our daily lives (not like, in a cannibalistic way, though…that’d be weird…I think I just freaked myself out) , we’re hopefully getting there bit by bit. Keep working at it, y’all. It’s worth it.

And now, for your viewing pleasure:

5″ x 7″ oil on board
