I started working on a privately commissioned mural last spring, but had to quit for the summer because of the rain and the heat. This weekend, I was finally able to finish it up. I started by drawing it on in chalk, then filling everything in in white. Then it was just a matter of adding color. I used an exterior enamel paint since it’ll be exposed to the elements. Each panel took about 2-3 hours, but it turned out well and I’m happy with it. And even more importantly, the owner is happy with it!

Here you can see some of the chalk lines and the first layer of white, as well as the pink on a few flowers.

Now I just have to polyurethane the hell out of it to preserve it!

I got to start my day in an excellent way: painting a mural for a little boy who is paralyzed from SMA. We have a really great local charity called Special Spaces of the Triangle that does bedroom makeovers for sick kids, and several of their organizers have come to paint with me at Artistic Abandon. They asked if I ever did murals, and I do, so I’ve done a couple for their projects. Today’s was for the ceiling above the little boy’s bed. They just needed some clouds painted in, so I hid a few that were shaped like animals to get his little brain interested. He can see whatever he wants in the others that aren’t specifically meant to be animals. Anyway, it was a banner way to start my day, and I’m grateful that I got to participate. Helping bring happiness to kids with special health needs is a little like crack: totally addictive. Looking forward to future projects.
