My fellow tattoo artist at Ratatat Tats, Julio, loves drawings and paintings of women with Harley Quinn clown makeup. He had a bare wall in his studio room, so as a suprise, I made him two paintings. I took the pin-up girl style, added the clown makeup, and then, because he frequently suggests filling in space around tattoos with “some filigree and some roses,” I included each in these sister paintings as a little insider joke. I posted the filigree one yesterday, so here is the roses one. Both are available as prints, shirts, dresses, pillows, mugs, and other fun swag. Links below the image.

In our larger bathroom at the tattoo studio, we had a wall with no art on it still, so S finally told me to buy a large canvas and make something new to hang there. Squeeee! Any excuse to make big art. You know I love me some figurative art, so, I painted this:

But because it’s a tattoo studio, I didn’t stop there, lol:

That’s right, I gave her a full tattoo sleeve, because hell yeah.

Both images are available as prints and on various merchandise on Fine Art America (here and here), RedBubble (here and here), and CafePress (here and here).

I have some friends who are actually amazing art patrons. They’ve bought a lot of my art and commissioned paintings over the last few years. They had a big open wall in their dining room that needed art, so they commissioned me to create another piece for them. They had seen this painting hanging in my tattoo studio and really liked it, so we used that as a jumping off point:

The husband collects maps, so I decided to add that as a component of the painting I was creating for them. I was giddy getting to work on large canvases again! Here is the finished triptych I just hung in their home:

More Abstract Cityscapes, Y’All

Go thick or go home. That’s what I always say. Okay, so this is probably the first time I’ve ever said it, but roll with it, y’all. Part of the joy of painting over old paintings is that you kind of have to go thicker with the paint, which means an opportunity for more palette knife work and delightfully sloppy fun. Like the last painting I posted, this one is a cityscape, but more identifiably so. Don’t ask me what city. Since it’ll be hanging in the tattoo studio, we’ll name the city Ratatatslandia. Or Emilyville. Too “on the nose?” Well, I’m open to suggestion on the title. For now, we’ll go with something boring like, “Abstract Cityscape in Blue.” Wow. Catchy.

Abstract Cityscapes, Y’all

Someone stop me. SOOOOO many abstracts for Ratatat Tats! I decided to include a couple abstracts that are more like my dancer series, inasmuch as there is something identifiable within the abstract painting. Instead of figures this time, I went for cityscapes. Sort of. It’s a “barely there” kind of dealio for this first one:

Abstracts, Y’all

I had forgotten how much fun painting abstracts could be! I had been doing such tight, controlled, realistic work, that I forgot how freeing it could be to slap paint on the canvas all thick and gushy-like. I forgot how satisfying squishing and sliding paint around with a palette knife could be. I also forgot how hard on the hands it is working with big paintbrushes. Phew! That’s a workout! But, admittedly, a very fun one.

Here is the largest of the ones I’ve created for my tattoo studio, Ratatat Tats. I love diptychs and triptychs because you can go large and still fit the canvases in your car and not have to rent a van to transport it locally.

Remember how I said that most of the paintings I’m creating for the tattoo studio I’m opening involve painting over old ones that I wasn’t so fond of? Well, here’s one of those. I’m applying plaster to the studio lobby walls, but there’s a little alcove that leads to 2 of the tattoo rooms that I’m not plastering. In order to segue from the plastered room to the non-plastered studio rooms, I’m mimicking the look of said plastering on the painting I’m hanging in the alcove. This is almost entirely palette knife work, with just a little brushed on glazing at the end:

Well, Cello There!

Finished up a new painting this week. That’s right. I painted! Like, painted painted, not just taught at the sip and paint studio or covered old paintings with more acrylic while I waited for my students to finish a step. It had been almost 2 months since I sat down and painted with oils and my brain was ready to explode from spending too much time in front of a computer and not enough time quietly listening to podcasts with paintbrush in hand. And 2 days later, I did it again. I know. Outta control.

Here’s the result of all that time breathing in paint fumes and turpenoid:

Know a caregiver, or someone with dementia, or someone who knows someone with dementia, or someone who knows someone who knows someone else who’s a caregiver? Or heck, do you know a person? Well, you should tell them about my book, Fractured Memories: Because Demented People Need Love, Too. Part memoir and part coffee table art book, I recount my family’s heartbreaking and hilarious journey through my father’s dementia. Available to purchase here (this is my favorite way if you live in the U.S.), here or here if you’d rather get the eBook than a print copy, and here (especially if you want a hard cover copy).

Just in case you had a long day, here’s something sweet for you. My long time readers will know all about Dizzy, the pitten, but just in case you don’t, you can read about him here. Despite the fact that he’s a little defective, he is, finally starting to grow up and act less like a puppy and more like a cat. For about a month now, he’s taken to sitting on me as long as I don’t touch him. And today – GASP – he let me scratch his head while he sat on me. Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles! Anyway, even though he’s a little mutant-y, he’s got a truly great face, so I decided to paint him. Or, well, do a painting of him, not cover him in paint. I shouldn’t have to explain this to you people. When I posted that on Facebook and Instagram, a disturbing number of my friends suggested I actually roll him in paint and smear him on a canvas. Clearly, I have all the right friends. So here’s my little Dizzybutt:
