I’m still having SO much fun with these abstracts for the tattoo studio. Like the last post, I had a good time playing with the palette knife, though it was on a much smaller canvas this time. I painted over an old painting that was just sort of meh. This isn’t usually a color combo that I love, but S asked me to do something in these colors, and I actually kinda dig it! Don’t ya just kind of want to lick it? Wait, is that just me? Too weird? Oh, well.

If Bob Ross taught me anything, it’s that afros just don’t work on white guys. And if he taught me anything else, it’s that sometimes in art you have happy little accidents. As mentioned in my last post, I managed to spill a whole cap of ink onto my painting and threw my back out cleaning it up. I thought the whole thing was ruined, but when I finally made it back into the studio today, I discovered I actually kind of liked the ruined painting. So rather than scrapping the whole thing, I decided to embrace the mess and roll with it.  So here’s the next Chickadees painting video. Please excuse the hairdo – I hadn’t planned on filming myself today.

Watercolor Butterfly

People keep telling me I need to do videos of myself making art. The problem with that is that realist paintings take a looooooong time, and it’s tiny little paintstrokes and it’s pretty boring to watch. So I’ve decided to do a few quick and dirty watercoler with India ink paintings. I don’t have a ton of experience with watercolors, and I haven’t used pen and ink since college, so for now I’m having fun experimenting and letting you watch. I did two paintings today, but my phone is an asshole and stopped recording half way through the second one. And now it’s getting dark and my studio has shitty lighting, so I can’t try again. But at least I got one done and uploaded.

I should also note that I don’t have any fancy set up for getting the camera focused on my painting, and I don’t have the money to buy a fancy set up. So I did a little artist hack and jerry-rigged a harness with some twine and hooks in my ceiling. Super hightech over here, people.

And now, for your view pleasure, here’s a little watercolor and India ink painting of a butterfly.

Remember how I had a dream that I did a series of paintings and called them “Low Hanging Fruit” and then, instead of being a normal human, I got up and sketched several? Well, here’s the second one, fresh off the easel.

If you’ve been reading my blog for more than a minute, you know that I like bourbon. A lot. Bourbon is awesome.  It is the wind beneath my wings. Which is why I decided to do a second bourbon painting (you can find the first one here), this time of Angel’s Envy bourbon. Because wings. It’s like Red Bull, but for badasses. Granted, I’ve never actually tasted it, but that bottle… I was at a friend’s house, and was taking pics of her various bourbon bottles (as one does) and just loved this one. Hopefully, I can sample it in the near future. So here’s my second bourbon painting:

Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens

As mentioned awhile back, I have a friend who has a bunch of chickens. There was something that was bothering me about the painting I did of her black star chicken, Aretha. So I changed up the background color and added more color into her feathers.

Aretha 2

And I decided that it needed a companion painting because Aretha looked lonely, and we all know that there’s nothing sadder than a lonely chicken. So I created a painting of her pal Victoria, a lavender cochin chicken.

Originals available here. Prints and stuffs and things available here, here, here, and here. And if you’re jonesing for some chicken music (I mean, are any of us not jonesing for more chicken music in our lives?), I give you this:

Yesterday I posted the first of four paintings that were commissioned of a very battle-scarred fiddle. You’ll see what I mean with the next one:

I have a friend who has chickens. Actually, I have several friends who have chickens, but only one of them lives nearby. One person, not one chicken. All of my one friend’s chickens live nearby. Why do I always have to explain this stuff to you people? Anyway, she’s got several different kinds of chickens, and they have all kinds of fabulous names. So, I went over, drank her bourbon, and took pictures of her chickens to paint from. Or from which to paint. Grammar nazis.

Here is the first of what will hopefully be a series. Meet Aretha, a black star chicken:

I have no idea how well she can sing, but with a name like that…

Original available here. Prints and other merchandise available here.

Electric Guitar in Blue

Along with starting some new paintings, I finished up another painting over the last couple days. I’ve never been all that enamored of guitars, but I sure love a few guitar players who’ve been incredibly generous with their talent and time. Decided to paint a guitar in their honor:

It was a little bit of a nightmare to paint because of all the straight lines <damn you, guitar strings and frets> but I managed to complete it. Original available here. Prints available here.

Know a caregiver, or someone with dementia, or someone who knows someone with dementia, or someone who knows someone who knows someone else who’s a caregiver? Or heck, do you know a person? Well, you should tell them about my book, Fractured Memories: Because Demented People Need Love, Too. Part memoir and part coffee table art book, I recount my family’s heartbreaking and hilarious journey through my father’s dementia. Available to purchase here (this is my favorite way if you live in the U.S.), here or here if you’d rather get the eBook than a print copy, and here (especially if you want a hard cover copy).
