We’re at #10 you guys!! I have now been tattooing for about 5 months. But I haven’t felt like a real tattoo artist until this past weekend when I got a massage and the massage therapist laughed and told me I had “really well-developed forearms.” Woot woot! I’m gonna look like Popeye, y’all. And I’m gonna be damn proud of it. It was another pretty slow week at the tattoo studio. July in this area sucks for businesses (it was the same way at my last business, so I’m not panicking…yet). But I did have some fun tattoos to share, so here you go:

Aaron Walker - Cartman the dog

Meet Cartman. He is a dog. I looooooooove doing pet portraits!! Squeee!

arm band mandala -y

Just a pretty little mandal-y arm band.

compass

A compass. Obviously.

mechanical shark - Joe Bobbitt_compressed

I love this one. It’s from a video game, apparently. I know jack about that stuff, but I had a blast doing this.

owl - Adam Allegrini

For a customer who digs owls, and the a pancreatic cancer/Alzheimer’s ribbon for loved ones.

Brian Kirkpatrick - marvin robot with planet balloons

Marvin the robot, because 42. Excited to see this one once it has healed and the white no longer looks pink.

cupcake

Just in case you weren’t already craving carbs…

We used to do Pet Portrait classes at my sip and paint studio, and one of my customers (who has since become a friend) came every time and painted one of her cats. She did a bunch of great paintings of her furry friends, but her favorite kitty, Gertie, was a fluffy, black, little thing. She was Sarah’s other half.

Sarah Badore

Recently, Gertie passed away, and Sarah decided she wanted to get a tattoo to commemorate her little buddy. She sent me a sheet with several watercolor kitties, so we decided to combine her painting of Gertie with the style of the watercolor kitties:

I was so honored to be part of this. First, to get to help her make a great painting of her buddy while she was still alive, and then to help her commemorate Gertie now that she’s gone. This is the kind of thing I was really looking forward to when I decided to learn to tattoo. I love being able to help people document a part of their lives and do something that really means something to them. Here’s the final tattoo:

dog photo, pet portraits, sip and paint studio

We offer Paint Your Pet classes at the sip and paint studio that requires customers to email me their pet’s photo in advance so that I can sketch it onto a canvas before they arrive for class. You never know what you’re going to get – we’ve had some strange animals (including a kinkajou and a stuffed teddy bear) in strange settings (on the toilet, mostly hidden under a large chair), and sometimes people wait until the last minute to email me their pics, so there’s no time to consult with them to suggest a different photo. I often have to do some creative editing. For the class I just had, something in the photo really “stuck out” to me, and I wasn’t sure if I should sketch it in or not. You’ll see what I mean:

Now that you’re as scarred as I am, you can go about your regularly scheduled programming.

At my studio, we offer pet portrait classes, and people often struggle with how to make their painting a little funkier than a traditional portrait. I realized that I didn’t have any samples that really gave them an idea of how to do that. While a traditional portrait can look great, and I still get people commissioning pet portraits from me in that style, I really do love when I get to play with color to bring out the personality of each person’s pet. So I decided to whip out a couple quick paintings as examples of how to do that, and I played with my new GoPro while I did it so that you could watch the process. Here’s the first video (the link is below the picture):

I think this is my 4th post today. Geez. Someone tell me to shut the hell up already! Or don’t. Maybe wait until after I finish this one, then tell me to shut my bourbonhole.

Tonight at Artistic Abandon, we were doing our quarterly pet portraits class. Normally, I dread the class, because it’s a shit ton of work for me prior to class (tracking down everyone’s photos, getting them sized and color corrected and printed, sketching them onto the canvases, etc), and it’s kind of organized chaos during class, especially at the end of class when everyone needs us to fix what they’ve done and make them look like they have eyes instead of black, soulless, pits of despair. Tonight was no different, though it was a nice, low maintenance group at least. But at the end, when most of the painters had gone, I started working on one woman’s painting putting the finishing touches on it to make it actually look like her particular pup. I heard sniffling behind me, but kind of ignored it and kept painting and bringing out the dog’s personality. When the sniffling didn’t stop, I turned around and saw that she was crying. Apparently, the doggy had passed away about a month ago. So I gave her a hug and started asking questions about the dog, and making little changes to the painting as she talked about it that weren’t really visible in the low quality photo we were working from. The other girl that was still finishing up her painting said that her first pet portrait with us a few months ago had been of her kitty that had died, and that she and her husband both cried when she brought it home. She’s done several paintings with us in memory of pets that have passed on since then, and it’s really cathartic to pay tribute in this way.

Sometimes in the clamor of people demanding more and more of me in exchange for less and less, I forget that what we do at the studio can be a real gift. Whether it’s just a fun night out to ease some tension and get a break so a mom doesn’t throttle her kids, or giving someone a loving way to honor a furry family member, we get to help people tap into something they don’t normally get to tap into (sometimes they just tap into a beer, but still, there’s creativity involved). And tonight we did that. The woman we were helping showed me the honor of letting me see a vulnerable side that I’m sure most of the public doesn’t get to see, and I got to validate that and let her know it’s not only okay, but right and good because it comes from a place of love. Tonight, I feel very lucky to do what I do.

Please remind me of that tomorrow when I start bitching again.
