This weekend, my mom came down to visit. Now that she doesn’t have to take care of my dad, she can travel more, so we’ll be taking turns visiting each other instead of me always driving up there. On Sunday, we got together with family for lunch. As we were sitting down to eat. S found two lucky pennies on his chair. No one knew where they’d come from, but for me, it made it feel like my dad was there with us. After lunch, a couple of the adults went out to hide Easter eggs for my cousin’s toddler. To distract said toddler while they were doing it, I taught him how to hide heads-up pennies and say, “This is going to make someone verrrrry happy!” And so the tradition continues.

Also this weekend: I sold TWO realist paintings. The first was the Saxophone painting. It went to a friend, which makes me really happy. It’s hard saying goodbye to pieces that are meaningful to you, and with my dad being a sax player and with my mom and I having used the painting as the front of our thank you cards to everyone following the memorial celebration, this piece means a lot to me. Knowing that it’ll be with someone I know and like who plays music, too, made it easier to let go. The other piece was the Violin head painting. That one went to a stranger, which gives me a little thrill. It’s exciting when your work goes to someone who doesn’t even know you, because you know it’s really about the piece itself, so it’s validation of your work.

So, all in all, a good weekend. And on my walk today, I found 4 lucky pennies and a 4-leaf clover. It must be my lucky day. Yay pennies! Yay art!

Fresh off the easel, I just completed this little piece of a saxophone. Guess what, y’all? Painting brass is $%@$%^$ hard.

Part of the Fractured Memories paintings series that I’m working on includes little 6″x6″ oil paintings of things that remind me of my dad. As his own world view fractured and he became able to only see pieces of it, so did, in some ways, my view of who my dad was. I have little snapshots in my head of who he was and what he loved. So my goal was to do a series of small fragments of things that represent him so that even people who didn’t know him would have an inkling of the things that made him him. For the next few Thursdays, I’ll try to remember to post a new one. Here’s what we’ll start out with:

My dad was a musician and played the clarinet and saxophone with his swing band, Nick Page and The Red Hot Smoothies. They mostly played events around Charlottesville, but his identity was very much tied in to his role as a band leader and musician. The Smoothies still exist and play a few gigs here and there with the remaining members and new members as needed. Dad’s go-to guitar player, Tom Harbeck, posted on Facebook a couple days ago that he was playing a gig with the Smoothies and someone came up at the end of the night to compliment the band and asked who the sax player used to be. Tom told him, “Nick Page” and the man smiled and said, “Yes, that’s the one.” Glad to know he’s still remembered even though he hasn’t played a gig in about 5 years. So, with that in mind, here are two paintings that give snapshots of who my dad used to be:

“Clarinet” 6″x6″ oil on canvas

“Sax” 6″x6″ oil on canvas
