Well, what do you know?! We didn’t get destroyed by the hurricane after all. Other areas weren’t nearly as lucky, so please, take a moment to donate to a charity working in the affected areas because there are a lot of people who lost everything. The only thing we really lost was about half a week of wages. Sucks, but it could have been SO much worse. And I actually did end up having enough tattoos to do my supposed-to-be-weekly post of tattoos:

Brayam and James lyrics

Had 2 customers get matching tattoo lyrics on their rib cages. Not sure what it really means, but I love the font they chose.

jellyfish - Rain Navarro_compressed

Probably my favorite from the week. A lovely little watercolor jellyfish.

roses - Brandy Rivera

This one came in last minute but I had just enough time to squeeze her in before we closed for the hurricane.

Sanskrit - Everything happens for a reason - Vickie Horner

“Everything happens for a reason” in sanskrit.

Jasmine Sipe cover up

A cover-up. Forgot to get a better pic of the before tattoo, so had to use the one the customer sent for her consultation.

Had some fun tattoos this week. Got to do my first chest piece. The customer already had the wolf and moon, as well as the roman numerals, but he wanted to fill in the rest. So I added trees and clouds that blended into the clouds on his arm. I also added shading on the lower part of his pecs to give the illusion that he has a bigger and more chiseled chest. His comment: “I look like I’ve been going to the gym!”

Isaac - chest piece

Another new customer has very little open skin left to tattoo, but has “the itch” again, so we found a spot for this little gem. Get it? Little gem?

crystals - Amanda Bretz

The next one tugged on my heart strings and made me feel the feels. Of course.

daddy's little girl - Brittney Thompson

And my favorite of the week was a walk-in who wanted a bear, an octopus, or something Star Wars-y. So I showed him some of my watercolors and he opted to go with the octopus and add a watercolor background. I have to admit, I’m proud of this one. I really love doing this style, so I hope I get more requests for stuff like this.

Octopus - Matt Onley

I did a few tattoos this last week or so that I’m pretty happy with. I might have even danced a jig after the giraffe one. But there’s no video evidence, so I get to pretend I’m not that big of a dork. Thought you’d enjoy seeing some of my favorites:

It’s official. I LOOOOOOOVE tattooing realistic animals and tattooing other stuff in the style that looks like a sketch. Love love love it. Love. It.

I am LOVING these splotchy watercolor tattoos, y’all. They’re just so cheerful! And I can see my own progress from the first couple I did to the one I did today. In the interest of the tattoos holding up over time, I’ve made sure to include strong black  images that won’t fade as much as the colors. These days, though, tattoo inks have gotten pretty good and they’re lasting a lot longer, so it may not be as much of a concern as it used to be.

Here are the first couple that I did:

But I wanted to play with this style some more, so I decided to actually do some watercolor paintings. There’s a fabulous photographer whose work I love named Terry Davis (seriously, go check out her work), and she posted a photo of a daisy, and I loved the shape:

terry davis sunflower

I mean, isn’t this stunning?! You can get prints of it on Fine Art America.

So I used her photograph as inspiration for a watercolor daisy:

I have been forbidden by my tattoo mentor and by my husband from giving away any more tattoos, so I decided to auction this one off. I posted it on my Facebook page and let my friends bid on getting this tattooed on them. The friend that won requested some color changes and asked that we make the colors more splashy and less drippy. So I did a little tweaking and here’s what she got:

Bonnie's daisy

It’s such a happy tattoo! If anyone is interested in doing the original watercolor I’d auctioned off, let me know! It’s about a 2-hour tattoo.

And just for funsies, I took a picture of the tattoo before I added color, and I love it, too, as a stand-alone tattoo, so thought I’d share it with you.

We used to do Pet Portrait classes at my sip and paint studio, and one of my customers (who has since become a friend) came every time and painted one of her cats. She did a bunch of great paintings of her furry friends, but her favorite kitty, Gertie, was a fluffy, black, little thing. She was Sarah’s other half.

Sarah Badore

Recently, Gertie passed away, and Sarah decided she wanted to get a tattoo to commemorate her little buddy. She sent me a sheet with several watercolor kitties, so we decided to combine her painting of Gertie with the style of the watercolor kitties:

gertie.jpg

I was so honored to be part of this. First, to get to help her make a great painting of her buddy while she was still alive, and then to help her commemorate Gertie now that she’s gone. This is the kind of thing I was really looking forward to when I decided to learn to tattoo. I love being able to help people document a part of their lives and do something that really means something to them. Here’s the final tattoo:

I’ve had way more opportunities to practice the noble art of drawing on people with needles than I’d thought possible. I’ve had friends offer to let me play on them, I’ve had strangers take a chance. And some of them have even paid me AND asked to pay me for a second one. I mean, hell yes. So following those first few that I posted the other day, here are some more I’ve gotten to do:

Here’s what I’m learning: There are a lot of different needles. There are a lot of different skin types. There are a lot of different inks. There are a lot of different tattoo machines. There are a lot of different power sources and cords. And now you know what you need to know to tattoo. You’re welcome.

Calf Skin Is the Best

Holy crap, I LOVE calf skin. The skin on the back of your leg, I mean, not the skin of a baby cow. And when I say I love it, I don’t mean, like, for dinner. I love to tattoo it. It is the perfect skin. It’s pre-stretched and firm as though it wants to be tattooed. It’s all, “Hey there, ladycakes, come shove some ink into me.”

So, yesterday I was supposed to do 5 tattoos, but then the weather decided to be an asshole and snow and I only got to do 2. But they were both on people’s calves and OH MY GOD I LOVE CALF SKIN!!!

bonnies-watercolor-poppy.jpgJon's Dopey and Empire State Building

Today, one of Julio’s regulars was in and I showed her pics of what I’d done yesterday and she asked me to give her a tattoo while she was in! So I got to do this little cutiepatootie.

Taylor's elephant and dandelion

And what I learned from her is that back of the neck skin is lovely. Side of the neck skin is a total asshat and is not my friend. But I’m doing my best to win it over.

I’m learning, folks, I’m learning.
